Tandis que l'anthropologie du XIXe siècle faisait du « primitif » un troqueur matérialiste mais maladroit (pâle ébauche de l'homo economicus à venir), plus tard Mauss en fit plutôt le dépositaire d'une autre logique, celle du don. En comparant son expérience chez les Garifunas du Honduras avec la production ethnographique récente sur les Yanomamis d'Amérique du Sud, l'auteur constate d'abord qu'aucun des deux modèles ne peut rendre compte des faits observés, de façon satisfaisante. Il propose de distinguer trois niveaux. Le donné ethnographique nous livre d'abord un ensemble d'actions orientées qui s'intègrent dans des stratégies. Mais l'analyse de ces dernières s'avère impossible sans référence aux normes qui assignent aux acteurs des fins culturellement souhaitables, des moyens pour les atteindre et des contraintes qui pèsent sur leurs choix. Ces normes elles-mêmes reproduisent les contradictions qui caractérisent l'ensemble des rapports sociaux : la réciprocité dans tel contexte peut fort bien coexister avec la prédation dans tel autre. Enfin, les rapports que le groupe entretient avec son environnement, à travers une technologie donnée, font eux-mêmes peser des contraintes de système qui orientent les modes de production et de circulation. Et, comme la démographie, la technologie, l'environnement ne sont pas stables à long terme, seule l'approche historique permet de réconcilier l'effet cumulé des décisions individuelles, le sens imprimé par les tensions au sein des normes culturelles et la dynamique de l'économie et de l'environnement. Comparing his experience among the Garifuna of Honduras with recent ethnographic production concerning the Yanomamo of South America, the author observes that none of the two models can satisfactorily account for the observed facts. He proposes to distinguish three levels. First, ethnographic materials present us scores of oriented individual actions, integrated within strategies. However, the latter cannot be properly analysed without setting them against the norms which assign to the individual the culturally-desirable aims, the proper means to achieve them as well as the constraints which limit their choices. Norms themselves reflect the contradictions which pervade the social system ; reciprocity in a given context may coincide with predation in another. Finally, the relationships between the group and its environment, through a given technology, exerts systemic constraints on the modes of production and circulation. In the long run, neither demography, technology nor the environment are stable sub-systems : only a historical approach may reconcile the cumulative impact of individual decisions, the directions set by the tensions within cultural norms, and the global dynamics of the economic system and the environment.
